Capturing the Beauty of Colour, Light and Shadow

Art Log

(posted on 30 Nov 2020)

Hello,

I hope you are all staying well and cozy while we are living this life.

Houses in the Okanagan have been selling at a rapid pace and our home overlooking the lake was one of those sold recently. Our home sold to the third viewer because she loved the studio, a full wall of North light--an artist's dream and a huge picture window on the east wall.  During 2 seasons I never needed to turn on the lights in the daytime.   We are moving to Oliver to a new rancher on the river walk.  No stairs will be nice.  My e-mail will remain the same but my phone number will change.

The first boxes I will unpack in the new home will be those labelled 'Kitchen' but I assure you the next will read 'Studio' as I am itching to paint after a month of packing boxes.

In the meantime, I'm sending you a colourful trio of paintings.  Each is 24 X 24, acrylic on canvas, framed and ready to hang.  Well priced, too at $500 each.  Shipping is just a little extra.

Please contact me with questions or interest at 'Contact' above and I will get right back to you.

When we first moved to the Okanagan and had our visit Penticton visit, I was thrilled to find some neon on Main Street. The Elite Restaurant, the oldest restaurant in Penticton is now a steak house.  Those of you who have been following me for a while know that I have done other nostalgic signs, The Oliver Theatre (sold) and The Pow Wow Drive In from Oroville, Washington. This painting 20" high by 10" wide has found a new Penticton home.

Please stop by Picture This! Custom Framing and Gallery, 133 Westminster Ave. W. in Penticton to see up close my recent collection.  Other items are on display in various parts of the gallery.  Peggy Stel, the owner, will be happy to answer al your questions and framing needs.  Open Tuesday to Saturday.

When I was young and our family would go to a restaurant, my father often ordered the "mixed catch". I thought it risky but thrilling--not to really know what you're getting.  So here's a small risk-free mixed catch for you today.

While it's not the end of the roses in Osoyoos--they're still blooming--I am moving on, likely to return to painting them again some day.  So this is my last for a while.  I call it Cotton Candy because of the colour.

'Cotton Candy' 8 X 8 X 1.5" Acrylic on exhibition canvas.

The second painting requires a bit of an introduction.  Some of you who have been following me for a while know my penchant for nostalgic neon signs as I've painted The Oliver Theatre sign (sold) and The Pow Wow Drive In sign from Oroville, Washington.  When we first arrived in Penticton, I was thrilled that there was a huge neon sign on Main Street and that the restaurant was actually operating and had been since 1922.  The Elite Restaurant is not called that any longer, it's a steakhouse now.  Next week 'The Elite Restaurant' will be showing at Picture This! Custom Framing and Gallery in Penticton.

The Elite Restaurant 20 X 10" Acrylic on canvas.  $300.

Please enquire if you're interested in either of these items.

Hello,

I've been busy painting roses again from my friends' garden.  Here are three for your viewing pleasure along with an invitation to see my paintings in a local show presented by Artists on Main entitled 'This is the Okanagan and Beyond'.  The roses are:  'Look at Me', 'Full Bloom' and 'Big and Bold'   Each rose priced at $120.  Below, the poster for the show.

Just what you've been waited for . . . the answer to my question, "What should I make, eggplant parmesan or moussaka?" and you, the readers, have answered.  It was Eggplant Parmesan.  Never fear, my neighbour has arrived with more eggplants and, this time, it will be the Moussaka.

But in the meantime, a few more roses for your eyes only at this time.  The first, 'Orange Crush', 'The Fairest of Them All' (fuchsia rose), and 'Kissed by the Sun' (a pink and gold rose).

Each one, priced at $120,  is 8 X 8 X 1.5" acrylic on exhibition canvas with the sides painted so no need to frame. Shipping a little extra.  Contact me to enquire or purchase.

Orange CrushThe Fairest of Them All

Hello, Art Lovers,

I am sequestered in the house, striving to get all outdoor activities finished before 11 a.m.  So I need your help with a question.  Do I make eggplant parmesan or moussaka with these fresh from the garden eggplants?

An image of my work currently on display at Picture This! Custom Framing and Gallery in Penticton located at 133 Westminster Ave W, Penticton, BC V2A 1J7

Peggy does a spectacular job with hanging works.  When you're in Penticton, come visit and see the displays of 8 artists.  Just a little off the beaten track but worth it.

I'm currently working on a painting of hollyhocks which is keeping me on my toes with all its delicacy and nuances of shadows.

There is something enchanting about the form, scent, colour and texture of roses with all their differences.  These three rose paintings left me wanting to paint more flowers, dahlias?  perhaps peonies.  On the left, Fuchsia Beauty, followed by the yellow rose 'Beguiling' and finally, 'Solo Act' a soft, warm coral pink rose painted with bold brush strokes.

'Sticky Fingers' was a commissioned painting for the client's partner who has an affinity for peanut butter and honey on a toasted focaccia bun. Can you blame him" IThe painting takes a place of honour close to the source of this breakfast delicacy. Many thanks to the client for the commission and photo.
